Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to host the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention, under theme DIASPORAS' CONTRIBUTION TO VIKSIT BHARAT beginning Wednesday, January 8,  in Bhubaneswar. The event will bring together members of the Indian diaspora from over 50 countries, as the state prepares to showcase its vibrant culture and heritage.

The convention will commence with the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, organized by the Odisha government in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The main sessions are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the event and President Droupadi Murmu presiding over the valedictory session. During the closing session,

President Murmu will also present the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awards to honor the achievements of diaspora members across various fields.
The chief guest, Trinidad and Tobago President Christine Carla Kangaloo, address the convention virtually.

Showcasing Odisha's Heritage

Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja revealed that 21 iconic destinations in Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Jajpur have been selected to introduce the delegates to Odisha's rich history and traditions. Over 5,000 delegates are expected to attend, with many serving as ambassadors of Odisha's tourism potential.

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the significant contribution of the Indian diaspora to global remittances and cultural promotion. Secretary (CPV & OIA) Arun Kumar Chatterjee stated, "The diaspora, totaling 35.4 million, is one of our greatest strengths." He highlighted how the diaspora can aid Odisha’s untapped tourism potential and its development under the central initiative 'Purvadoy.'

Key Highlights of the Convention

PM Modi will flag off the inaugural Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a special tourist train for diaspora members.  In Addition, four exhibitions will be inaugurated, focusing on:

  • The legacy of Ramayana.
  • The diaspora's contributions to technology and 'Viksit Bharat.'
  • Odisha’s cultural and historical heritage.

The convention will also feature five thematic plenary sessions covering topics like sustainable development, women’s leadership, and stories of cultural connections.

Celebrating Odisha’s Art and Festivals

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who visited iconic shrines like the Jagannath Temple and the Sun Temple at Konark, praised Odisha’s preparations. 

The Odisha government has planned numerous cultural events for the delegates, including the Rajarani Music Festival, International Odissi Dance Festival, and Food Festival. Guests can also enjoy the Adivasi Mela, Bird Festival in Chilika, Beach Festival in Puri, and light and sound shows at Dhauli and Konark.

Enhanced Security and Festive Spirit

To ensure safety and smooth operations, 2,700 police personnel and 1,200 central forces will be deployed across Bhubaneswar. Residents have been encouraged to decorate their homes, shops, and public spaces, adding a festive charm reminiscent of Diwali.

The previous PBD convention was held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. This year, Odisha aims to leave an indelible impression on the international community, further strengthening India’s ties with its global diaspora.
