New Delhi: King Charles III and Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on the phone for the first time today since he ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom. PM Modi sent the King his best wishes for a long and prosperous reign. The government said in a statement to the media that the two spoke about a range of issues of shared interest, such as tackling climate change, protecting biodiversity, and finding creative ways to finance the energy transition.
PM Modi expressed his gratitude for "His Majesty's enduring interest and advocacy on these matters." the statement read. The Prime Minister also gave the King a briefing on India's priorities for its G-20 Presidency, which included the spread of digital public goods.
On December 1, India formally took over as G20 President. On September 9 and 10, the next G20 Leaders' Summit at the level of Heads of State and Government will take place.
PM Modi also discussed the significance of Mission LiFE, or Lifestyle for the Environment, which is an initiative by India to encourage environmentally friendly living. The five-year initiative was unveiled by the Prime Minister during COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021. It is intended to be an India-led worldwide mass movement that would encourage both individual and group action to protect and preserve the environment.
