Ahmedabad: The Election Commission of India is likely to announce the schedule for the upcoming Assembly elections in Gujarat this week. The Commission had earlier this month announced the schedule for the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections but did not announce the Gujarat poll schedule. Regarding this, the commission cited the tradition adopted in 2017.

Himachal Pradesh will go to polls in a single phase on November 12, while the counting of votes will take place on December 8. The Election Commission, while keeping the date of counting for Himachal Pradesh after about a month of voting, had clearly indicated that the counting of votes for the Gujarat elections will also be held on December 8. In 2017, elections were announced on different dates in the two states, but the counting was held simultaneously on December 18. In fact, due to floods in Gujarat, the Election Commission had to vote after the announcement of the Himachal election schedule in the state. Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh went to polls simultaneously in 1998, 2007 and 2012. The term of the 182-member Gujarat Assembly ends on February 18, 2023.
