PM's Security Breach: Punjab CM to take action against ex-DGP

NEW DELHI: In view of Prime Minister’s security during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state in January 2022, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has decided to initiate disciplinary actions for major penalty against Sidharth Chattopadhya, the then DGP Punjab, Inderbir Singh, former DIG, Ferozepur Range and Harmandeep Singh Hans, the then SSP Ferozepur. 

The Chief minister  on March 20 had ordered the initiation of "disciplinary proceedings for major penalty" against former DGP S Chattopadhyaya and 2 other police officers over the security breach.

Inderbir Singh, the former deputy inspector general (DIG) of police for the Ferozepur range, and Harmandeep Singh Hans, the former senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Ferozepur, would also face high penalty disciplinary actions in addition to Chattopadhyaya, who has since retired.

 

The order from the state government further stated, "Explanations be called from Sh. Naresh Arora IPS, the then ADOP Law & Order, Sh. O Nageshwara Rao IPS, the then ADGP Cyber Crime, Sh. Mukhvinder Singh China IPS, the then IGP Patiala Range, Sh. Rakesh Agrawal IPS, the then IG Counter Intelligence-cum-ASLO & Nodal Officer, Sh. Surjee For your information and necessary action.

Following an investigation of the security failure during Prime Minister Modi's visit to Punjab in January 2022 by a committee constituted by the Supreme Court, which accused numerous state employees for failing to follow procedures, the state government took this action.

The prime minister returned from election-bound Punjab on January 5 after his convoy became stuck on a flyover owing to a roadblock by protesters in Ferozepur. He did not attend the scheduled activities, including a rally.

"As the Prime Minister's convoy arrived at a flyover, some 30 miles from the National Martyrs Monument in Hussainiwala, it was seen that some protesters had blocked the route. For 15 to 20 minutes, the prime minister was stranded on a flyover. This was a major breach in the Prime Minister's security "In a statement, the Home Ministry had stated.
