New Delhi: The Election Commission has written a letter to all political parties. In this letter, the Election Commission has warned political parties about election promises. They have asked political parties not to make any fake election promises to the public. Whatever election promise is made, it should take care of whether they are financially worthy of fulfilment.

In its letter, the Election Commission has said that it cannot ignore the lack of complete information on election promises and their undesirable impact on economic stability. Fake poll promises have far-reaching implications, the commission said. The proposed format of declaration of election promises made by political parties seeks to bring standardisation in the nature of the information that makes facts comparable.

In the proposed draft, it is mandatory to announce the financial implications of the promises and the availability of financial resources. Through the reform proposal, the EC aims to tell voters about the financial viability of poll promises in the manifesto. At the same time, it has to be told whether they are within the financial capacity of the state or central government.
