LISBON: Due to "present meteorological and environmental circumstances," Portugal will once more be on fire alert starting on Sunday, according to Jose Luis Carneiro, the country's minister of internal administration.

Carneiro said, the notice will be in effect across the whole Portuguese mainland until August 23. The alert condition entails "particular constraints regarding the use of fire, the use of machinery, and agricultural activities, as well as access to forests," according to Carneiro, who was speaking at a press conference. 54% of fire disasters are caused by the use of fire, he said.

Beginning on Sunday, the majority of Portugal will experience a new heatwave during which the temperature may once more reach 40 degrees Celsius.

This will produce the weather conditions for both drought and fire when combined with winds that are expected to reach 60 km/h. The nation is making every effort to protect its citizens under these unusual circumstances.

Everyone, from firefighters to local communities, has been giving it their all. More than 84,000 hectares of land have been destroyed by flames in Portugal this year alone due to one of the worst climatic disasters in recent memory.
