Kolkata: A poster depicting West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee as 'Maa Durga' and PM Narendra Modi as 'Mahishasur' has created a controversy in the state. Terming it as an insult to PM Modi and Sanatan Dharma, a BJP leader said that the party will approach the Election Commission on the issue. The poster was put up in Midnapore in the West Bengal district. TMC leader Anima Saha is the party's candidate from ward number 1 of the district.

The poster depicts Mamata Banerjee as Mother 'Durga', while PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are shown as Mahishasur. Mahishasura is a demon in Hindu mythology. The poster also depicts other opposition parties as goats, which reads that 'if anyone else votes for them (opposition parties), they will be sacrificed.' "This has created a political uproar in the Midnapore district.  

Local BJP leader Vipul Acharya has said that portraying leaders as deities is a disdain of Sanatan Dharma. "It is also an insult to the Prime Minister and home minister of the country. Vipul Acharya said the BJP will complain to the Election Commission. Meanwhile, TMC leader Anima Saha said she did not know who put up the poster. Anima Saha said, "If I had known about this, I would never have allowed such posters to be put up in the area.''
