New Delhi: In the contempt case, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan has been convicted by the top court. Taking Suo Motu cognizance in the tweet case, the Supreme Court of India has convicted lawyer Prashant Bhushan for contempt of court. During the hearing of this case, Prashant Bhushan had said that "Even though the tweet may look unpleasant, there is no contempt of court".

Taking Suo Motu cognizance of two separate tweets made by Prashant Bhushan regarding Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde and four former CJIs, the Supreme Court had initiated contempt action against him. The top court sent a notice to Prashant Bhushan. In response to the notice, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan had said, "Criticism of the CJI does not diminish the dignity of the Supreme Court. The tweet in relation to the CJI riding on the bike shows his anguish for not having a normal hearing in court. My thinking behind the tweet about four former CJIs may seem unpleasant, but not a contempt".

According to the provision of the punishment under Section 12 of the Contempt of Court Act, the convict can face a jail term of six months or a fine of up to two thousand rupees or both. Now the court will decide the punishment on 20 August.
