President Droupadi Murmu, on her three-nation tour, made history by becoming the first Indian president to visit Mauritania. She met with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott on Wednesday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations.

The two leaders signed four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in areas such as diplomatic training, cultural exchange programs, visa exemptions, and Foreign Office consultations, solidifying the cooperation between the two countries.

Their discussions also covered collaboration in sectors like health, education, trade, investment, and capacity building. President Murmu praised the Indian community in Mauritania for their contributions to the country's socio-economic growth and highlighted the role of the Indian diaspora in India’s vision for a 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047.

She emphasized that India, with the help of its diaspora, can support Mauritania’s growth in sectors like infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, and digital innovation. Additionally, she met with Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, to explore further cooperation.

The Ministry of External Affairs noted the importance of the visit, especially in the context of India's focus on Africa. With over 33 million Indians in Africa, the partnership with the continent is key to strengthening shared values of freedom, democracy, and people-to-people connections.

Mauritania, rich in natural resources like iron ore, copper, gold, and diamonds, offers significant investment opportunities for India, particularly in the energy and oil sectors.

President Murmu’s visit coincides with Mauritania holding the Chair of the African Union, adding further significance to this landmark visit.
