On Tuesday, September 3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brunei, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Southeast Asian nation. His arrival was met with a warm reception from Brunei's Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi expressed eagerness to engage in discussions with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and other members of Brunei’s royal family. The objective is to elevate the enduring relationship between India and Brunei, enhancing the historical bond between the two nations.

This year also commemorates the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei. A spokesperson from the Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the importance of this visit in celebrating and strengthening the bilateral partnership.

Brunei marks the first destination in Prime Minister Modi's two-nation tour. During his time in Brunei, Modi will engage with the country’s leadership to explore ways to enhance bilateral cooperation.

In a statement prior to his departure from New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi remarked, “As we celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations, I look forward to my meetings with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and other esteemed members of the Royal family to take our historical relationship to new heights.”

The visit aims to boost collaboration between India and Brunei in various sectors, including defense, trade, investment, energy, space technology, and health. Opportunities for cooperation in emerging fields will also be explored, further strengthening the bilateral ties.

After concluding his visit to Brunei, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Singapore on Wednesday. There, he is set to meet with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. Modi will also engage with leaders from Singapore’s vibrant business community.

Prime Minister Modi added, “Both Brunei and Singapore are key partners in our Act East Policy and the Indo-Pacific Vision. I am confident that my visits will further enhance our partnerships with Brunei, Singapore, and the broader ASEAN region.”
