MELBOURNE: After being postponed for two years owing to the Covid-19 outbreak, Cricket Australia (CA) announced on Friday that the Prime Minister's XI match would resume. The game versus the West Indies will take place at the Manuka Oval over the course of four days and nights for the first time on November 23.
The game will commemorate the first match's 70th anniversary, which was also against the West Indies and took place in 1951.
The PM's XI team will be led by head coach Andre Borovec and assistant coach Jono Dean, according to CA.
While Dean, who has previously played for the PM's XI against the West Indies, is the head coach of the ACT Meteors in the Women's National Cricket League, Borovec is currently an assistant coach of the Australian men's side.
George Bailey, chairman of selectors for Cricket Australia, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will meet soon to go through team selection.
According to Prime Minister Albanese, "I am pleased to confirm the return of the Prime Minister's XI this summer, an Australian institution that spans 70 years."
"I am thrilled to welcome the West Indies, along with Cricket Australia. I enjoyed watching Viv Richards, Malcolm Marshall, and Joel Garner when I was younger, so I'm excited that my first Prime Minister's XI will compete in Canberra against the current West Indies heroes. I also want to express my gratitude to assistant coach Jono and coach Andre for the guidance they will give to my PM's XI team. I will meet with the national selectors in the upcoming weeks to discuss the PM's XI, which I anticipate will be extremely strong. Andre Borovec, head coach of the Prime Minister's XI, said, "It is a wonderful honour to coach the Prime Minister's XI and I look forward to working alongside Jono Dean who knows first-hand how important the honour of representing this side is.
The squad will be unveiled in the upcoming weeks by the prime minister and the national selection panel, with those chosen ready to take on the challenge of a four-day match against the West Indies under lights.
