NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has strongly criticized the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government's decision to observe June 25 as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' (Constitution Murder Day). The declaration commemorates the imposition of Emergency in 1975 under then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's Congress regime.
In her statement on Saturday, Vadra accused the NDA government of continuously undermining the Constitution through their actions. She emphasized that those who believe in the Constitution will stand up to defend it against such negative politics.
The central government announced on Friday that June 25 would be observed annually as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas,' marking the day Emergency was imposed nearly five decades ago. The move has sparked significant controversy and opposition.
Taking to social media platform 'X', Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reiterated her commitment to defending the Constitution. "Those who attack the spirit of the Constitution through their decisions will mark the day with negative politics, but we, who believe in the Constitution, will defend it," she posted.
Other opposition leaders have echoed her sentiments. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of effectively celebrating 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' every day for the past decade, particularly through policies that oppress disadvantaged sections of society. "In the last 10 years, your government has celebrated 'Constitution Murder Day' every day. You have snatched away the self-respect of every poor and deprived section of the country every moment," Kharge wrote on X.
Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh also weighed in, suggesting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is using this declaration to divert attention from its controversial and unpopular policies. He stated that the move is an attempt to distract the public from the current government's shortcomings and failures.
