NEW DELHI: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress General Secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, has convened a meeting of party leaders on Tuesday to determine the reasons for the defeat, amid calls for a leadership shift in the party.

In the Uttar Pradesh elections, the Congress received little over 2% of the vote and two seats. The meeting, which will be attended by the party's office-bearers and senior leaders, has been called in Delhi.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tried her hardest to make the Congress relevant in all five states, but she was unable to gain public support. After a long meeting on Sunday to examine the outcome of the Assembly elections, the Congress Working Committee reaffirmed its faith in interim party president Sonia Gandhi and gave her authority to make "necessary and extensive" organisational changes.

The CWC backed the staging of a 'Chintan Shivir,' according to Party General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and Chief Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala (brainstorming session).

"The Indian National Congress is deeply concerned about the recent Assembly election outcomes in five states. The party acknowledges that, due to flaws in our approach, we were unable to adequately expose the BJP state governments' misrule in four states and defeat anti-incumbency in Punjab in the short time following a leadership change "said the CWC resolution.
