Corona infection is spreading rapidly in India. In such a big concern, it is about the supply of food grains. However, the good thing is that despite all the troubles, not only has there been tremendous production of wheat in Punjab this time, but the Central Government has started the work of transporting it to other places by running special trains.

Punjab Food and Civil Supplies Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu said that despite the difficulties created by Covid-19 in the first week of May, 90 lakh metric tonnes of wheat has been successfully procured in the state during the last 19 days. This time around 135 lakh metric tonnes of wheat is to be procured. Ashu said that the Punjab government headed by Captain Amarinder Singh is going to strictly follow the rules regarding social distance in 4000 mandis of the state, taking care of the health of all those involved in this work. He said that it is a satisfactory thing for us that despite lack of labour and closure of jute mills, 90 lakh metric tonnes of wheat has been purchased in 19 days.

Punjab requires 3.5 to 4 lakh labourers to meet the procurement target of 13.5 million tonnes. 90 percent of these workers come from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. These workers reach Punjab by 15 April. But this was not possible due to lockdown. To avoid crowds in the mandis, the Punjab government extended the horse-trading till June 15. The Food and Civil Supplies Department and Punjab Mandi Board (PMB) have set up 3,447 wheat procurement centres. Earlier there were 1849 grain market centres. Thhe government has distributed 27 lakh coupons to the farmers. They will come to the mandi according to their turn. By the first week of May, 13,80,000 coupons had been issued. 70,000 to 1 lakh coupons were issued daily.
