New Delhi: Professor M. Jagdish Kumar has been appointed as the new chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Professor Kumar has also been the Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Professor Kumar's five-year tenure ended on 26 January 2021. After this the extension of the tenure of the Vice Chancellor of JNU was given.
In January 2016, Jagdish Kumar was made the VC of JNU. However, there have been many controversies during his tenure, whether it is the locking of JNU office by students or the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar. Apart from this, there was also a fight between the groups of students inside the JNU campus last year. The disappearance of JNU student Najeeb also made headlines. It is being told that the name of Professor Jagdish Kumar was at the forefront of the race for the chairman of UGC. Apart from him, the names of Pune University Vice Chancellor Professor Nitin R Karmalkar and IUC Director Professor Avinash Chandra Pandey were also included in this race.
Please tell that Professor Jagdish Kumar was born in Nalgonda district of undivided Andhra Pradesh (present day Telangana). Jagdish Kumar, a resident of Mamidala, obtained MS (Electrical Engineering) and Phd (EE) degrees from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. From 1991 to 1994, Professor Jagdish Kumar served as Prof. David J. Rolston at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
