KOLKATA:: The West Bengal government submitted a report to the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday afternoon detailing its response to incidents of violence across the state following the inflammatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad.

According to a report given by state advocate general S.N. Mookerjee to the Calcutta High Court's division bench, which included Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, 280 arrests were made in connection with the incident. The district of Howrah had the highest number of arrests, with a total of 99 arrests. The state government also declared that no new complaints of violence had been received from anywhere in the state in the previous 48 hours.

Meanwhile, on Wednesay, the same division bench delayed its decision on a PIL seeking the deployment of central armed personnel in troubled regions of the state, as well as an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The petitioners contended that because the protests in West Bengal were "pre-planned," the NIA should investigate all of the circumstances surrounding the violence.
