Amritsar: The growing Christian conversion in Punjab has raised concerns of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC). Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh has claimed that Christian missionaries are running campaigns for forced conversion in the border areas of the state. In these areas, people are being converted to Christianity by inducement or tricking them.

In a statement, Giani Harpreet Singh said, "Christian missioners have been campaigning for forced conversions in border areas for the past few years. Gullible people are being lured into Christianity. We have received a number of reports in this regard.'' It may be recalled that in view of the conversion of Sikhs, especially Dalit Sikhs in Punjab, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has decided to launch a campaign. Giani Harpreet Singh is also a Dalit Sikh. His statement comes at a time when Dalit and Sikh organisations in Amritsar celebrated the 101st anniversary of the uninterrupted entry of 'Karah Prasad' into the Golden Temple and Akal Takht and restoration of Dalit Sikh rights for prasad.

The Jathedar of the Akal Takht further said, "Religion is a matter of spirituality. Forced conversion and dispersion can never be justified. All Sikhs should support SGPC for campaigns against conversion.'' Terming Christian conversion as a major challenge, he said the SGPC campaign needs to be carried out across the country to deal with it.
