Chandigarh: Hours after the Northern Zonal Council (NZC) meeting in Jaipur, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday raised a hue and cry by demanding a piece of land in Chandigarh for a separate Punjab Assembly from the central government. His demand comes at a time when a similar demand of Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar to form a separate state assembly in Chandigarh was cleared by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Meanwhile, Punjab Health Minister Chetan Singh Jaudamajra has warned that the Haryana government will not be allowed to build an assembly building in Chandigarh. He said that if Haryana wants, it should construct an assembly building in Panchkula, Faridabad or Kurukshetra.

Chetan Singh said in a warning tone that Chandigarh belongs to Punjab and will remain Punjab's. Haryana has also gone from Punjab. Chandigarh already belongs to Punjab. The Assembly building also belongs to Punjab, it has been given to Haryana as a brotherhood. On the other hand, CM Bhagwant Mann tweeted that land should be given in Chandigarh for the Punjab Assembly as well. He said a similar demand for a separate high court for Punjab has been pending for a long time. Let us know that Punjab has been laying claim to Chandigarh since the reorganisation of the state in 1966.

The State of Haryana was separated from undivided Punjab under the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966, Chandigarh was formed as the new union territory under the direct control of the centre and the hilly areas of Punjab were transferred to Himachal Pradesh. Chandigarh, identified as the capital of Punjab in the Punjab Capital (Development and Regulation) Act, 1952, became the common capital of both Punjab and Haryana, and the properties were divided into states in the ratio of 60:40.
