Chandigarh: In a recent police encounter, notorious gangster Karanjit Singh, also known as Jassa Happowal, sustained injuries during an attempt to escape custody. The Punjab Police had taken him into custody to recover a pistol related to an intentional murder case. However, he attempted to flee, prompting the police to open fire, injuring him in the leg. Happowal, associated with multiple murder cases and other serious crimes, was recently arrested. The encounter resulted in six gunshot wounds, and an officer from the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) was also injured. Both have been hospitalized.

AGTF's Sandeep Goyal stated that Jassa Happowal, residing in Nawanshahr, has connections with gangsters Harvinder Rinda and Sonu Khatri. The incident occurred in Peermuchalla, Zirakpur. The recovery included one Chinese pistol and five cartridges. The AGTF team, committed to dismantling criminal networks as directed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, took the necessary action to prevent Happowal's escape.

Jassa Happowal had been arrested on November 30 for his involvement in six murder cases, including the double-murder of a mother and daughter in Bhojowal village, Jalandhar Rural, and other heinous crimes. Goyal disclosed that Happowal had attacked an individual in July, acting on information from Sonu Khatri, who was contacted by someone suspecting their spouse of having an extramarital affair. The October spree involved three murders in as many days. The police are determined to curb criminal activities in line with the government's directives.
