Chandigarh: The Punjabi language has been made an essential subject in Punjab for all students from classes 1 to 10. The Punjabi language has also been made mandatory in government offices. Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi said schools will be fined up to Rs 2 lakh for violating the law. Not only that but all the boards of the state will also be written in the Punjabi language.
On Thursday, the Punjab Assembly passed 15 bills, including two important bills related to the Punjabi language. The Bill was introduced by Higher Education and Languages Minister Pargat Singh, which includes the Punjabi and Other Language Education (Amendment) Bill, 2021 and the Punjab State Languages (Amendment) Bill, 2021. The Punjabi and Other Language Education (Amendment) Bill, 2021 makes Punjabi a compulsory subject for all schools in classes 1-10 in schools across the state. In this bill, there is a provision to impose a fine of up to 2 lakh on the schools that do not comply with the order.
According to the same bill, if a school violates the provisions of this Act or the rules made thereunder for the first time for more than a month, then a fine of Rs 50,000 will be imposed on the institution. Whereas similarly, if the school is found violating this law for the second time for more than a month, then a fine of Rs 1 lakh will be imposed on the schools. At the same time, for the third time, a fine of Rs 2 lakh will be imposed on schools for violating the Act for more than a month.
