Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his preference for Kamala Harris over Donald Trump in the upcoming U.S. presidential election. During an interview at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin outlined his support for Harris, citing reasons for his choice.
Putin stated, âOur preferred candidate was President Joe Biden, but since he is not running, we support Kamala Harris as recommended by him and his allies.â He praised Harris for her âinfectiousâ laugh, suggesting it reflects positively on her well-being. âHer expressive laugh shows she is in good spirits,â he commented.
In contrast, Putin criticized Trump for implementing a record number of sanctions on Russia. He expressed hope that Harris would avoid such measures, stating, âIf Ms. Harris is doing well, she might refrain from such actions. Weâll respect the American people's choice in the end.â
Putinâs comments were met with criticism from U.S. officials. John Kirby, White House National Security Communications Advisor, urged Putin to stop discussing U.S. elections. âMr. Putin should not be favoring any candidate. The choice of the next U.S. president should be made by the American people alone. We would appreciate if Mr. Putin would cease commenting on our elections and stop any interference,â Kirby said.

This criticism follows reports from the U.S. Justice Department alleging that the Russian state-owned broadcaster RT is engaged in covert efforts to influence American public opinion before the election. The Kremlin has consistently denied any interference in U.S. elections, and a Foreign Ministry spokesperson has promised to retaliate against U.S. media in Russia.
