Quentin Tarantino and Miramax are locked in a court battle over the director's plans to sell off Pulp Fiction NFTs, which began as a financial cheese royale. According to Variety, Quentin Tarantino was sued by Miramax on Tuesday, alleging him of copyright infringement by distributing NFTs based on the "Pulp Fiction" script.

Tarantino revealed the information during a crypto-art seminar in New York recently. According to the media reports, Tarantino stated in a November 2 press release, "I'm pleased to be offering these unique moments from 'Pulp Fiction' to fans." The idea is to sell non-fungible tokens (NFT) based on sections of Quentin Tarantino's original handwritten script for the film, as well as commentary. The NFT is billed as "secret," implying that only the owner will be able to see its contents.

The complaint argues, however, that Tarantino did not consult with Miramax, which still owns the rights to the director's 1994 masterwork, according to Variety. The attorneys representing Miramax have sent a cease and desist letter in an attempt to put a stop to the transaction, but Tarantino and his crew are still pressing forward. Tarantino's activities, according to Miramax, have jeopardised the studio's plans to enter the market for "Pulp Fiction" NFTs.

Surprisingly, the case appears to centre on whether or whether selling NFTs based on script excerpts is considered "publishing" of the screenplay. According to the claim, Tarantino's counsel notified Miramax that Tarantino still has the right to publish his script under the Miramax contract, and that he is exercising that right through the NFT sale. Miramax claims that because NFTs are a one-time transaction rather than the publication of a script, it has complete ownership over the NFT rights. Contract violations, copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and unfair competition are all alleged in the claim. Tarantino's representative, meanwhile, has yet to react to a request for comment.
