The southern state Karnataka has been devastated by torrential rains, especially in its coastal districts. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced the immediate release of Rs 500 crore as an immediate measure to restore basic amenities and infrastructure damaged during the recent downpour that claimed 32 lives so far.
According to reports, 34 people suffered injuries and 300 people are sheltered at different centres. Four teams each of NDRF and SDRF are taking up the relief measures and 14 relief camps have been set up in the three districts, Bommai said. Meanwhile, parts of south Gujarat and Kutch-Saurashtra regions received very heavy showers in last 24 hours leaving 14 people dead, while over 31,000 were evacuated so far this rainy season, officials said on Wednesday.
Three NHs in Kutch, Navsari and Dang districts were blocked due to damage caused by rains. 51 state highways, over 400 roads have also been damaged, state Disaster Management Minister Rajendra Trivedi told reporters.
Due to heavy rain, Telangana govt extended holidays for all educational institutions till July 16. The govt had earlier declared holidays for 3 days due to forecasts of heavy rains across the state and the schools were scheduled to re-open on Thursday. However, with the rains continuing, the authorities decided to extend the holidays by three more days.
