New Delhi: The country has undergone a number of changes in the recent past, while PM Narendra Modi has announced the renaming of India's highest sports award Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna to Major Dhyan Chand. Prime Minister Modi tweeted the news. Major Dhyan Chand was one of the leading players in India who brought respect and pride for India, he tweeted. It is true that India's highest sports honor will be named after him.
After the Indian Hockey team won the medal at the Tokyo Olympics after 41 years, the Government has taken a big decision keeping in view the spirit of the countrymen. The Indian men's hockey team defeated Germany 5-4 to clinch the bronze medal. This is the first time since the 1980 Moscow Olympics that the hockey team managed to finish the podium.
It may be recalled that India's highest sports award was established in 1991-92 in the name of former PM Rajiv Gandhi. The award is given every year to Indian sportspersons for their outstanding and outstanding performance in the field of sports in the last four years at the international level. Under this award, the player is given an award amount of Rs.25 lakhs, a medal, and a certificate.
