Former President Ram Nath Kovind has been chosen to head a committee, according to sources cited by PTI on September 1. This is a significant development that indicates the government's intention to review India's electoral process. The group's main goal is to determine whether the "One Nation One Election" idea, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vigorously supported, can be implemented.

There has been increased talk about the possibility of moving up the dates for both the Lok Sabha and various state assemblies. This happens right after a special session of Parliament that will take place from September 18 to 22. Politicians are debating whether this meeting will center on this trending issue even though the agenda has not yet been made public.

The committee was established as five states prepared for upcoming assembly elections in November and December. These will occur before the Lok Sabha elections, which are scheduled for May or June of 2024. Recent actions suggest the government may be thinking about moving up some of these elections to coincide with the Lok Sabha elections.

PM Modi has been a fierce advocate for aligning the elections for the state legislatures and the Lok Sabha. The government's determination to see this idea through is indicated by the choice to nominate Kovind to lead the exploratory committee. Given that there will soon be several elections, this might be especially important.

What does 'One Nation One Election' mean?

The Lok Sabha (India's lower house of Parliament) and all state assemblies will be elected at the same time under the "One Nation, One Election" concept. It is intended to hold these elections concurrently, either on a single day or within a set window of time.

Benefits of "One Nation, One Election"

The lower cost of holding elections is one of the main advantages. Separate elections demand a sizable financial investment.

The administrative and security forces, who would otherwise be involved in election duties on multiple occasions, would be less burdened if elections were held simultaneously.

Instead of being stuck in election mode all the time, which frequently hinders the implementation of policies, the government can concentrate more on governance.

The challenges of "One Nation One Election"

The Constitution and other legal systems would need to be modified in order to put this into effect. Additionally, there is worry that national issues may take precedence over local ones, influencing the results of the state elections. The political parties' ability to agree is another major obstacle.
