Veteran Dalit leader and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan was born today. Ram Vilas Paswan passed away last year. Born in Shaharbanni village of Khagaria district, Ram Vilas Paswan graduated from Kosi College, Khagaria, and did his MA from Patna University. Subsequently, in 1969, he was selected for the post of DSP but did not want to join the police service, so Paswan left the post like DSP and became an MLA on a Joint Socialist Party ticket.

Subsequently, in 1970, Paswan was made joint secretary of the SSP. Five years later, he had to go to jail for opposing Indira Gandhi's emergency and was released from jail in 1977. He was then made general secretary of the Lok Dal in 1985. Paswan then took over as general secretary of the Janata Dal in 1987. Paswan was very pleasant and friendly. From the very beginning, Paswan was very close to Jayprakash Narayan, Karpuri Thakur, Rajnarayan, and Satyendra Narayan Sinha.

The same Paswan was a visionary, so he resigned from the Cabinet in 2002 when the Gujarat controversy took place. At this time, he knew that the NDA was soon to collapse. He had seen that the BJP and BSP were going to be together due to which Mayawati got the post of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister. In the same alliance, Paswan was made minister of chemicals and fertilizers at the Centre in 2004 and once again took charge of the Ministry of Steel. But he left the UPA in 2012 on the issue of direct foreign investment.
