The country is celebrating Hanuman Jayanti today (8 April) amidst the acute crisis of Coronavirus. Along with this, Ramayana is being re-telecasted on Doordarshan, in which Hanuman Ji was played by the powerful actor of Hindi cinema, Dara Singh. Although Dara Singh had played mythological roles in many films earlier, the fame of Hanuman Ji in Ramayana brought him fame was supernatural. With this, Dara Singh became popular and revered in every household in the role of Hanuman.

Dara Singh was a professional wrestler before appearing in films. Dara Singh, born as Didar Singh Randhawa, had become a legend due to his stature and gentle behaviour, leaving the world of cinema. The stories of his wrestling from King Kong were on the tongue of a child. Dara Singh started his film career with the 1952 film Sangdil. He appeared in the lead role in the 1962 film King Kong. Along with this, Dara Singh was a popular stunt actor of his time. Dara Singh did the maximum 16 films with Mumtaz. Both of them were very popular. Along with this, Dara Singh was the most expensive artist in his category. He used to charge around Rs 4 lakh for a film.

Dara Singh made Hanuman's character come alive on the small screen in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayana. When Ramanand Sagar intended to create a Ramayana, only Dara Singh was named in his mind for the role of Hanuman. The interesting thing is that Dara Singh was 60 years old at that time. At the same time, like the rest of the characters of Ramayana, Dara Singh as Hanuman began to be worshiped from house to house. Later, when BR Chopra made the Mahabharata, he chose Dara Singh to play Hanuman in a special episode.
