While the popular TV show Ramanand Sagar's 'Ramayana' is making new records, the interest of people about this serial has also increased in the last few days. There were many such incidents during the shooting of the serial, which show the feelings of the characters of the serial 'Ramayana'. Dara Singh played the role of 'Hanuman' in 'Ramayana'. When Ramanand Sagar offered him the role, he refused to work citing his age. But when Ramanand Sagar did not listen, then Dara Singh worked in this serial with full dedication. He went so far in the role of Hanuman that he gave up eating chicken and mutton till the shooting was over. Dara Singh is no longer with us. His son and actor Vindu Dara Singh revealed this in an interview. He told that his father gave up non-food during the shooting of 'Ramayana'. Dara Singh belonged to the Punjabi family, so he had a great attachment to Nonveg. But he had great reverence for Ram and Ramayana. So he decided that until the shooting of the serial is over, he will not even touch chicken and mutton.'

The Ramayana was broadcast in 1987–1988. This serial of 78 episodes was being shot in Surat and Mumbai. The set of the serial did not have the facilities in those days. Also, the washroom arrangement was not very good. Many actors did not even drink water throughout the day. Sunil Lahiri, who plays Laxman in the serial, says, 'Many scenes were shot in the village. Many of us did not drink water, because if we drank water, we would have to go to the washroom. Ramanand Sagar was very serious about the serial. He wanted perfection in every scene. Deepika Chikhaliya, who plays Sita, says, 'The first episode was an hour long and took about 15 days to shoot. I used to stay at the shooting location for 27 days in a month. There used to be a makeup studio, so we used to live there and no one would return to Mumbai. Deepika Chikhaliya was just fifteen and a half. She says, 'We had no idea that this serial is going to create history.

In the Ramcharit Manas, Tulsidas has told about the costumes of Rama and Sita and we had to look like that. This was the first time the Ramayana was being shown on television. Sunil Lahiri told in an interview that due to being away from home for weeks, he had lost contact with the outside world. Sunil says, "There were no mobile phones. There was a telephone booth some distance away from where we were shooting. We used to call home turn by turn. Many times, we had to wait in line to get our turn. The shooting location of 'Ramayana' was in Umargram, Surat. Along with Dara Singh, his son Vindu Dara Singh also visited the set several times. He says, 'The entire cast and crew of the serial used to go to Surat by train. The shooting was for 5-6 days and then they used to come back to Mumbai for 2-3 days."
