This veteran industrialist calls himself 'Accidental startup investor'

Mumbai: Ratan Tata, the honorary chairman of the country's most famous businessman Tata group, has described himself as an 'accidental startup investor'. Tata has invested in more than a dozen startup companies. Tata described the privately held investments as 'an accident'. Ola, which provides taxi booking services through the app and then Digital Payments Paytm, has invested in both companies since 2015 and they are the initial investors to invest in them. Talking about investing in startup companies, he made the first investment in e-commerce company Snapdeal.

In an interaction with Sudhir Sethi, Chief of Chirate Ventures, Ratan Tata said, "My becoming a startup investor is like an accident (without thinking). While I was working with the Tata group, the startup sector was drawing me. But the distance remained because it was a conflict with the interests of the Tata group.  But when I retire, the responsibility of the Tata group has ended on me".
