Raised under the care of his maternal uncle, Sardar Bhojrajrao Bargal, he found his calling in the realm of warfare, initially joining his uncle's cavalry. It wasn't long before his natural leadership abilities propelled him to the forefront, earning him charge of a cavalry detachment.

His journey towards prominence took a significant turn when he aligned himself with the Peshwa, Bajirao, in 1721. This alliance marked the beginning of a distinguished career, characterized by rapid ascension through the ranks and notable military achievements. Holkar's pivotal role in campaigns such as the Battle of Delhi (1737) and the Battle of Bhopal showcased his strategic prowess and valor.
