India is commemorating the 37th death anniversary of the courageous Neerja Bhanot on Tuesday, September 5. This solemn day marks the tragic 1986 hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 and serves as a poignant reminder of Neerja's extraordinary bravery in the face of terror, an act that saved the lives of hundreds of passengers. Her story continues to inspire generations, and her legacy is a testament to the indomitable spirit of human courage.

On this day, 37 years ago, a young flight attendant named Neerja Bhanot embarked on Pan Am Flight 73, an ill-fated journey that would forever change the lives of those on board. Little did she know that her unwavering determination and quick thinking would make her a symbol of heroism.

The harrowing events of that fateful day unfolded as the flight was en route to the United States. Armed terrorists hijacked the plane, thrusting the passengers and crew into a life-threatening ordeal. Neerja Bhanot, just 23 years old at the time, found herself at the center of this nightmare.

With immense courage, Neerja took swift action to protect the lives of those on board. She helped passengers escape through emergency exits and even managed to hide the passports of American passengers to protect them from potential harm. Neerja's selfless acts of heroism continued until the very end.

Tragically, Neerja paid the ultimate price for her bravery, losing her life in the process. However, her sacrifice ensured the survival of 359 other souls on that doomed flight. Her actions exemplify the very essence of courage, compassion, and sacrifice.

Neerja's story has been widely celebrated and acknowledged, from newspaper articles to books and even a Bollywood film. Last year, Sonam Kapoor received her first National Award for her portrayal of Neerja on the big screen. Yet, it is crucial to remember Neerja Bhanot not only as a cinematic heroine but as a real-life icon who demonstrated exceptional valor in the face of terror.

Born on September 7, 1962, in Chandigarh, Neerja was a cherished miracle for her parents, Harish and Rama Bhanot. Her father, Harish Bhanot, a journalist during his days, fondly recalled the day Neerja was born, saying, "Neerja was a fruit of our long prayers for a daughter. It was September 7, 1962, in Chandigarh - where I was posted at that time. The maternity ward matron rang up to inform me that we had been blessed with a baby-girl... I was very happy to hear this and gave her a 'double thanks'. She thought I had got her wrong and so she repeated, 'It is a daughter'."

Neerja's journey to becoming a symbol of bravery started in Chandigarh, where she attended Sacred Heart School. Her family later moved to Mumbai when she was in the sixth grade. In Mumbai, Neerja continued her education at Bombay Scottish School and subsequently graduated from St. Xavier's College. Her upbringing reflected her inherent qualities of being a "no problem" child and a "no-nonsense" girl, earning her the affectionate nickname "Lado."

As we commemorate the 37th death anniversary of Neerja Bhanot, let us not only honor her memory but also reflect on the values she represented. Neerja's selflessness, courage, and unwavering commitment to the safety of others serve as a timeless inspiration for all of us. Her story reminds us that even in the darkest of moments, acts of kindness and heroism can shine brightly and save lives. Neerja Bhanot's legacy will continue to inspire generations to come, and her memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who admire her extraordinary spirit.
