The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sent the name of opener Rohit Sharma for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. Apart from this, the names of fast bowler Ishant Sharma, opener Shikhar Dhawan and women cricketer Deepti Sharma have been sent to the Sports Ministry for the Arjuna Award. Earlier, in view of Coronavirus infection, the Sports Ministry gave instructions to send the names for the National Sports Award via e-mail. The nomination for the National Sports Award was to begin in April but due to the threat of Coronavirus, it was extended till May.
This year, the performance from January 2016 to December 2019 for the Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award will be kept in mind. BCCI President Saurabh Ganguly, Secretary Jai Shah and Treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal have extended best wishes to the four players for these awards and expressed the hope that these players will get the award. BCCI President Saurabh Ganguly said that the nominees have been selected after looking at the data and various parameters. Ishant has been the pioneer of Indian fast bowling for years and is the youngest Indian to play in all three formats. Apart from this, Deepti is the only Indian player to score the highest in ODIs and the only Indian spinner to take six wickets in ODIs.
Ganguly said that Rohit is a strong contender for Khel Ratna with his outstanding performance so far. Ishant, Shikhar and Deepti have also performed well and the Board hopes that they too are contenders for the Arjuna Award. The left-handed opener Shikhar holds the record for making the fastest century in debut Test and is the only batsman to win the Golden Bat twice in the ICC Champions Trophy.
