Moscow: A civilian cargo vessel, the Hong Kong-flagged Joseph Schulte, embarked on a daring journey hugging the Bulgarian coast en route to Turkey, defying a Russian blockade. Departing from the Ukrainian port of Odesa, the vessel's mission marks the first departure since Russia's recent attack on another ship in the Black Sea.

Co-owned by a German company, the Joseph Schulte is expected to reach Istanbul on the same day, reflecting the determination to navigate the challenging route established amid rising tensions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed the vessel was utilizing a "new humanitarian corridor" established by Kyiv after Russia's obstruction of a crucial grain and foodstuff export agreement across the Black Sea.

This bold step follows Russia's escalated attacks on Ukrainian Black Sea and Danube River ports, further highlighting the urgency of securing alternate export routes for the forthcoming grain harvest. As Ukraine and Russia are major global grain exporters, the earlier agreement had influenced food prices and provided crucial revenue for Ukraine's war efforts.

Reports indicate that US officials are engaged in discussions with Turkey and Ukraine about bolstering traffic along the Danube River route. These deliberations even encompass potential military support for Ukrainian ships, revealing Washington's commitment to the situation.
