Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is likely meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S Jaishankar  today (April 1) , during his two-day official visit to India. The focus of Lavrov's visit will be the global geopolitical environment in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In a tweet, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi stated, "Welcoming the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov as he arrives in New Delhi for an official visit." The Ministry of External Affairs released a media advisory about Lavrov's visit, but it makes no mention of a meeting between the Russian foreign minister and Prime Minister Modi.

India is also anticipated to press Russia for quick delivery of several military gear as well as components of the S-400 missile systems, according to people familiar with the meetings' preparations.

Lavrov is expected to brief India on Russia's efforts in Ukraine and the country's peace negotiations. The visit of Russia's foreign minister coincides with the country's ongoing conflict with Ukraine. India has taken a neutral stance so far, urging both countries to address their differences via discussion.

PM Modi spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, March 2, and March 7, and twice with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Last week, Jaishankar told Parliament that India's position on the Russia-Ukraine crisis has been "steadfast and constant," and that the country is seeking a rapid cease-fire.
