New Delhi: India has achieved great diplomatic success in Bangladesh. Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina has offered India to use the Chittagong port. Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met PM Hasina in Dhaka on Thursday (April 28, 2022). During this time, he also extended an invitation to Sheikh Hasina to come to India by the end of this year on behalf of PM Narendra Modi.

Bangladesh has given this proposal to India regarding the Chittagong port at a time when China is trying to increase its incursions into India's neighbouring countries through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). China's eyes were also on the ports of Bangladesh. In such a situation, PM Hasina's proposal is being considered as a big blow to China. Sheikh Hasina, while underlining the importance of connectivity between neighbours, proposed handing over her country's main port, Chittagong, to India for use. This will benefit the North Eastern States of India such as Assam and Tripura.

During the meeting, PM Sheikh Hasina said that the two countries have to further strengthen the connectivity. Her press secretary Ehsanul Karim said that PM Sheikh Hasina told Jaishankar that there was a need to increase connectivity for mutual benefit. In such a situation, the use of Bangladesh's southeastern Chittagong port will particularly benefit the northeastern region of India. With this, Sheikh Hasina has taken the initiative to restart the cross-border routes between Bangladesh and India, which was closed during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965. At that time, Bangladesh was part of Pakistan and was called East Pakistan.
