S Korean President appoints new envoys to China, Japan, Russia, UN

SEOUL: After naming a new ambassador to the United States last month, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol designated new ambassadors to China, Japan, Russia, and the United Nations on Tuesday, completing a new roster of top envoys to all four major countries.

According to sources, Yun Duk-min, a foreign policy expert who formerly served as the director of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, has been nominated ambassador to Tokyo, while Chung Jae-ho, a professor at Seoul National University, has been named envoy to Beijing.

Chang Ho-jin, a former Cambodian ambassador, has been chosen envoy to Russia, while Hwang Joon-kook, a former British ambassador, has been named UN ambassador, according to the presidential office.  The appointments brought the total number of ambassadors to four major countries to four.

Yoon appointed Cho Tae-yong, a former vice foreign minister of the ruling People Power Party, as his first ambassador to the United States last month.

Other appointments include Kim Joo-hyun, the head of the Credit Finance Association, as chief of the Financial Services Commission, Heo Seoung-woo, a former member of Yoon's transition team, as presidential secretary for public proposals, and Yu Byung-chae, a culture ministry official, as presidential secretary for culture and sports.
