Kochi: A Constitution Bench of nine Supreme Court judges will begin hearing on Monday (January 13) on a group of petitions on the issue of allowing women of all ages to enter the Sabarimala temple in Kerala. Also, other controversial issues of alleged bias against Muslim and Parsi women will also be heard.

A nine-member bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde will hear 60 petitions. Other judges on the bench include Justice R Bhanumathi, Justice Ashok Bhushan, Justice L Nageswara Rao, Justice MM Shantanagoudar, Justice SA Nazir, Justice R Subhash Reddy, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Suryakant.

A nine-member bench was constituted after a 3: 2 majority verdict was given by a five-judge bench headed by the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi. In fact, considering the reconsideration petition filed against the landmark judgment of 28 September 2018, a larger bench was referred to the verdict. In that historic judgment, women of all age groups were allowed entry into the Sabarimala temple.
