Lucknow: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning on Friday regarding an impending heatwave in several northern states including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh for the next five days. Additionally, it forecasted heatwave conditions in states like Madhya Pradesh and Bihar for the next four days.

According to senior IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar, temperatures soared as high as 45 degrees Celsius across various parts of the country in May. Dr. Kumar explained, "From April until recently, continuous western disturbances influenced Northwest India, resulting in isolated rainfall in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, thereby keeping temperatures relatively moderate. However, in May, temperatures soared to 45 degrees Celsius in many regions. Presently, Rajasthan has already recorded temperatures at 45 degrees Celsius, with similar conditions prevailing in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh."

Dr. Kumar further elaborated, "A heatwave is anticipated in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh for the next five days, and in Madhya Pradesh and Bihar for four days. Subsequently, there may be mild thunderstorms, leading to a slight drop in temperatures."

Addressing the southern states, Dr. Kumar stated, "Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and South Karnataka over the next five days."

In its weather advisory, the Met department highlighted the likelihood of heat to severe heatwave conditions over the plains of Northwest India and Bihar during the next five days. Furthermore, it indicated that heatwave conditions are expected to commence over East and Central India from May 18 onwards.

The Met department also mentioned that a wet spell, accompanied by isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, is expected to persist over south Peninsular India until May 23.
