New Delhi: Delhi's Rouse Avenue court convicted Jaya Jaitley, former national president of Samata Party, former party aide Gopal Pacherwal and retired Major General SP Murgai, convicted in 20-year-old defense deal corruption case. Along with this, the court has also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on all three.

The court ordered the three to surrender by 3 pm today. The lawyer appearing for CBI before Special CBI Judge Virender Bhat told the court that the culprits should be punished as much as possible because the nature of the crime committed by them is also very serious. The CBI had said that after the sting operation of Tehelka News portal, the role of the accused in this case has been exposed.

The CBI had demanded that no leniency should be taken in the court regarding the sentence of Jaya Jaitley and her former party colleague Gopal Pacherwal and retired Major General SP Murgai. Earlier, on July 25, the Rouse Avenue Court found Jaya Jaitley and the other two accused guilty of corruption and criminal conspiracy. The lawyer appearing on behalf of Jaya Jaitley had requested the court that his client's age is too much, so due to her age, it should be soft in sentencing.
