Mumbai: Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam criticized the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) on Friday for opposing the Narendra Modi government's Waqf (Amendment) Bill. Nirupam accused Uddhav Thackeray of trying to appease Muslim voters and called on him to clarify his stance on the bill. He pointed out that nine Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs abstained from voting on the bill in the Lok Sabha, questioning whether this was done to gain favor with Muslim voters.

Earlier, Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora also took aim at the Uddhav Thackeray faction, accusing them of hypocrisy for opposing the bill. Deora criticized the UBT MPs for being absent during the discussion on the Waqf Board Bill in Parliament, suggesting that Muslims who supported them would question this silence.

Shiv Sena (UBT), which is part of the India Alliance, has opposed the bill, labeling it as 'anti-Muslim.' UBT MP Priyanka Chaturvedi argued that the bill is another example of the BJP's agenda of polarization, this time targeting caste in addition to religion. She claimed that the bill undermines the federal structure and vowed strong opposition if it seeks to curtail anyone's rights. Chaturvedi also suggested that the bill is part of a strategy to gain an advantage in upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana, and Jharkhand, but expressed confidence that voters have become aware of such tactics.
