NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has appointed Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh as the chairperson of the AAP Parliamentary Party, announced on Friday.

Sanjay Singh, who joined AAP in 2012, has emerged as one of the party's most prominent and senior leaders over the years. He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2018 and was re-elected this year.

In April, the Supreme Court granted bail to Sanjay Singh, who had been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) last October in connection with an alleged money laundering case related to the Delhi liquor policy scam. He spent six months in jail before being released.

During his speech in the Upper House on July 1, Sanjay Singh claimed that the alleged liquor scam involved BJP members accepting a bribe of Rs 60 crore from Sarath Reddy through electoral bonds. Singh criticized the misuse of the ED and other investigative agencies, highlighting the imprisonment of opposition leaders and state chief ministers.

He pointed out that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, known for his work in education, health, electricity, and water sectors, as well as providing free bus travel for women, was also jailed before the elections. Singh urged the BJP to reassess its performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where the party did not meet its expectations.
