Abu Dhabi: Saudi Arabia has abolished the requirement for Muslim women performing Hajj or Umrah to be accompanied by a male guardian. Now any Muslim woman can go to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj or Umrah without a male companion. Earlier, it was mandatory for Muslim women to be accompanied by a male companion to perform Hajj or Umrah. Due to which many women could not go for Hajj or Umrah even if they wanted to.

Saudi Arabia's Hajj and Umrah Minister Dr Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah confirmed this and said that now women can perform Hajj or Umrah without any male companion. Ibrahim Hussein, the former Hajj minister of the Saudi government, has said that women already face many difficulties. They find it difficult to find a male companion (mahram) for Hajj or Umrah or even if they are found, the burden of inflation increases. Allowing women to perform Hajj or Umrah without a male companion, Hajj or Umrah is to simplify their lives.

According to the data released by the Government of India, this year around 80 thousand Indian Muslims will go to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj. Of these, 50 per cent are women. In 2019, a maximum of two lakh Indian Muslims went to Mecca for Hajj.
