NEW DELHI:: Hindus have requested permission from the Supreme Court to conduct religious ceremonies at the 'Shivling' located at the contentious Gyanvapi mosque site in Varanasi.

According to the plea submitted by Shri Krishan Janm Bhumi Mukti Dal President Rajesh Mani Tripathi, the petitioner is requesting permission from the Supreme Court to perform puja during the month of Shravana, which runs from July 12 to August 12, and to exercise their constitutionally protected rights to "freedom of conscience and free profession, practise, and propagation of religion" (Article 25).

"It is said that the applicant wants to carry out their religious rites on the "Shiv Linga" found during the survey carried out in accordance with the order issued by the relevant Varanasi court, as guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. It should be noted that the aforementioned "Shiv Linga" found during the survey has been properly protected in accordance with the ruling made by the relevant court ", the plea continued.

The plea made in the request was that although the mentioned Shivling was protected by the local court's ruling, there were still limitations on how Lord Shiva's worshippers, or bhakts, might give puja and carry out rites there.

The plea put out was that the Ayodhya ruling said that "a deity, once a deity, is always a deity and a temple, simply on being demolished, should not lose its character, holiness, or dignity."
