Chandigarh: Nearly two years after the security breach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 5, 2022, in Punjab's Bathinda district, Superintendent of Police Gurvinder Singh has been suspended, and he has been directed to report to the police headquarters. The Supreme Court's committee had earlier found the then Chief Secretary of Punjab Anirudh Tiwari and DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyay guilty in the matter. The five-member committee, chaired by former Justice Indu Malhotra, submitted a report to the Supreme Court, prompting the Centre to instruct the state government to take action against the guilty officials. However, no action has been taken so far.

The incident involved PM Modi's convoy being stranded on the road for 15-20 minutes as protestors blocked the road on his way to Ferozpur on January 5, 2022. Due to bad weather, he had to take the road route instead of visiting the National Martyrs Memorial in Ferozpur by helicopter. The Congress was in power in the state at the time of the incident.

Senior officials, including ADGP (Law and Order) Naresh Arora, ADGP (Cyber Crime) G Nageshwar Rao, IG (Counter Intelligence) Rakesh Aggarwal, SSP Moga Charanjit Singh, DIG Firozpur Range Inderbir Singh, and SSP Firozpur Harmandeep Hans, were on duty during the prime minister's visit. Initially, SSP Harmandeep Hans was blamed for the incident, but the committee's report held the then chief secretary and DGP responsible, noting that although inputs were shared by IG (SPG) RR Bhagat, no timely action was taken.

The committee's findings led to the suspension of Superintendent of Police Gurvinder Singh, marking a significant development nearly two years after the security breach. The incident forced PM Modi to return to Delhi, and the security lapse raised concerns about the safety protocols in place during his official visits. The current action follows the committee's recommendations and adds to the accountability measures for the security lapse during PM Modi's visit to Punjab. The suspension of Superintendent Gurvinder Singh serves as a step towards addressing the lapses in the security arrangements during the high-profile visit.

The incident's repercussions have extended to the political landscape, with questions raised about the effectiveness of the security apparatus and the need for swift action against those responsible. As Superintendent Gurvinder Singh faces suspension, the focus remains on ensuring accountability and reinforcing security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
