New Delhi:- Three-time Supercars champion and winner of his only NASCAR Cup Series appearance at the inaugural Chicago Street Race on July 2, Shane Van Gisbergen will return to the Cup Series on August 13 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway street circuit.

The 34-year-old from Auckland and New Zealand will once again drive the #91 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Trackhouse Racing Team's PROJECT91 programme.

"I didn't expect it to end like this," said Van Gisbergen, who returned to the Australian Supercars competition in Chicago after nine laps and an overtime victory of 1.259 seconds.

“Just getting to race in NASCAR is an opportunity I never thought I would have, but to win again this year was beyond my imagination. I can’t thank Justin Marks [Truckhouse Founder and Owner] and everyone at Truckhouse Racing and NASCAR for giving me this opportunity.

Van Gisbergen was one of only six foreign-born drivers to win a Cup Series race, becoming the first driver since Johnny Rutherford in 1963 to win a Cup Series race. This is just the latest resume to make him the fourth most successful driver in series history, including 78 wins and 47 pole positions, as well as winning the Supercar Championship in Triple Eight Race Engineering in 2016, 2021 and 2022. He also won the Bathurst 1000 in 2020 and 2022.

Marks founded PROJECT91 last year with the aim of expanding the organization's global reach by participating in the prestigious international racer's cup series. Indianapolis will be PROJECT91's fourth race, following performances by 2007 F1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen at the 2022 Watkins Glen (NY) International and March 26 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Marks admitted that the idea of bringing Van Gisbergen back to NASCAR had already started when the checkered flag fell in Chicago.

"After a performance like that, it's only natural that you want to keep going," Marks said. “Shane has shown he has world-class talent and what he did in Chicago was truly remarkable. Fans of PROJECT91, Trackhouse Racing and NASCAR will benefit from having him back. I don’t think it’s overly dramatic to say that the entire motorsports world will be eyeing the #91 Chevrolet at Indianapolis.”

Van Gisbergen will join trackhouse drivers Daniel Suarez and Ross Chastain at Indianapolis. Chastain won the race at the Nashville, Tennessee Superspeedway on June 25, a week before Van Gisbergen won in Chicago. A week after Chicago, Suarez finished second at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Georgia.

Darien Grubb, 47, will return to serve as crew chief on Van Gisbergen. His history includes winning the 2011 championship with Tony Stewart and the 2006 Daytona 500 with Jimmie Johnson. The win in Chicago was Grubb's 24th victory as chief flight attendant. "It was an absolute honor to work with a player like Shane van Gisbergen who put in such a performance in his first start," Grubb said.

“The team did a great job getting the car ready. This is my first event. We all wanted souvenirs and other things from there to remember it and tell our grandchildren about it for the rest of our lives. It was really great and I hope we can do the same again in Indy. "
