Tensions Escalate in Shimla Over Alleged Illegal Mosque: Protestors Clash with Police - Hundreds of Hindu protesters clashed with the police in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, on Wednesday, demanding the demolition of an alleged illegal mosque in the Sanjauli area. The situation turned tense as demonstrators broke barricades and chanted slogans such as "Jai Shri Ram" and "Hindu Ekta Zindabad."

The protesters gathered at Sabzi Mandi Dhalli and marched towards Sanjauli, where they encountered barricades near the Dhalli tunnel. In response, the police used lathi-charges and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

The unrest over the alleged illegal structure led to heavy security measures in Sanjauli and surrounding areas, which were fortified with increased police presence. The Shimla district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. This order bans gatherings of more than five people and the carrying of weapons in the area.

Himachal Pradesh Minister Vikramaditya Singh addressed the situation, emphasizing the need to maintain peace. He stated that while protests are a democratic right, they should not disrupt the area's tranquility. Singh also assured that if the mosque is found to be illegal, appropriate action would be taken following a decision by the Municipal Commissioner. He stressed that any demolition would occur only after the proper order is issued.

Leader of the Opposition in Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Jairam Thakur, criticized the Sukhu government for delaying action against the alleged illegal construction. Thakur accused the state of inaction and urged a swift resolution to the issue.
