Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has decided to go alone in the Haryana Assembly elections. This decision was taken at the party's core committee meeting held at the Ramdas Medical College on Thursday. This decision of the Akali Dal has been taken a day after the party's only MLA in Haryana joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In fact, in the core committee meeting, the Akali Dal has termed Balkore Singh, the only Akali MLA of the party in Haryana, to join BJP. Significantly, on Thursday, Balkore Singh joined the BJP along with former Olympic medalist Yogeshwar Dutt and former Indian men's hockey team captain Sandeep Singh. On the other hand, the Shiromani Akali Dal has started the process of selecting its candidates for the assembly elections.

On Monday, Shiromani Akali Dal leaders had reached Sterling Resort in Kurukshetra to screen the party's contenders for the assembly elections. A five-member screening committee formed under the leadership of Balwinder Singh Bhundad was screening 35 candidates from the Legislative Assembly. Party leaders said that the party high command will take a decision on contesting the eligible candidates among these candidates.
