Lucknow: Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party  (PSPL) said it will not participate in the upcoming assembly by-elections to 11 seats in Uttar Pradesh. Party President Shivpal Yadav said that instead of contesting by-elections, we are preparing for the assembly elections in 2022. In view of this, we will focus on strengthening the organisation. However, the party will contest several university and college student union elections across the state.

PSPL wants to increase its grip among the youth. So the Samajwadi Party (SP) wants to put a dent in the vote bank. Shivpal Yadav is visiting several districts of the state to create an organisational structure of the party. On August 8, he had also staged a protest against the Yogi government in Lucknow. A day before Shivpal's party's demonstration, the SP has also staged a protest against the state government.

In Uttar Pradesh, by-polls are scheduled to be held in 11 assembly seats. This includes Tundla, Lucknow Cantt, Govindnagar (Kanpur), Manikpur, Balha, Gangoh, Igleas, Pratapgarh, Jalalpur, Rampur, Hamirpur Assembly seats. Five seats are from western Uttar Pradesh. These seats have been vacated by the MLAs becoming MPs, most of which were occupied by the BJP. On the other hand, BSP is going to contest by-polls for the first time. Mayawati had made it clear long ago that her party would contest the assembly by-elections alone.
