Bhopal: After the political turmoil in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde became the chief minister of the state, while Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan took a dig at the Congress' "futile attempts" to save the MVA government. Shivraj said, "Congress is also strange. Those who could not save their government (Kamal Nath) were sent to save the government of Maharashtra. Poor Uddhav is also gone. The Congress has only one 'Nath,' the rest of the Congress is an 'orphan'.''
Eknath Shinde was sworn in as the new CM of Maharashtra on Thursday evening. BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the deputy chief minister of the state along with Shinde. The Maharashtra government has asked the newly appointed CM to prove his majority in the wake of the special session at Vidhan Bhavan on July 2. Earlier, after 39 Shiv Sena MLAs left with Shinde, the ruling MV alliance had gone into a minority, and then the Uddhav Thackeray-led government in Maharashtra fell.
With the support of independent candidates, the total number of MLAs supporting Eknath Shinde has gone up to 50. The rebel Shiv Sena leaders say they want Uddhav Thackeray to break the alliance with Congress and NCP and join hands with BJP. A day after Uddhav Thackeray resigned on Wednesday, Shinde formed the government along with the BJP. The BJP has 106 MLAs in the House. A party or alliance needs 145 MLAs to prove its majority in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly.
