Aizawl: The Mizoram government on Thursday issued a show cause notice to the director of Zoram Medical College (ZMC), the only medical college in the state and a dedicated COVID-19 hospital, seeking clarification, following rumors about the selection of some candidates. The state health and family welfare department had issued an advertisement last month inviting applications from eligible candidates for the recruitment of 50 staff nurses in ZMC on contract basis.

The 50 vacancies were to be filled through direct recruitment or walk-in-interview. The result of the personal interview held between September 27 and September 30 was declared on October 4. The order said that clarification was sought from the director following rumors about the selection of some candidates. The Director was directed to submit an explanation on the alleged irregularity at the earliest. However, the result was strongly opposed by voluntary nurses hired, political parties and a student body due to alleged irregularities and discrepancies.

Voluntary nurses have demanded that the recruitment result be rectified on or before October 14. He alleged that some candidates, who did not face personal interview, were shortlisted in the result for recruitment as staff nurse. To deal with the manpower shortage amid rising COVID-19 cases, the government had hired hundreds of nurses on voluntary purposes in ZMCs and other COVID-19 care facilities across the state.
